Unfortunately, today, Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or a Bone marrow transplant is the only cure for severe combined immunodeficiency. In cases of ADA (adenosine deaminase) deficiency, it is possible to treat the condition by life-long administration of the missing substance. ADA deficiency is one form of SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency), a disorder that affects the immune system. ADA deficiency is the second most common cause of SCID, accounting for 15% of cases.
Family Consulting
Treatment is only a portion of the cure. Many times families go through mental and emotional pain as they take care and continue to love their child with SCID. There are many cases where any sickness or disease affects the family structure. If the family structure is affected, the patient suffers significantly greater. Family consulting is a way to teach parents and siblings to continue to show love throughout the home setting and to stay strong for their loved one. SCID and various genetic diseases can be cured with treatments but most importantly strong faith and belief that they will be cured.
